Schoolrooms and forms in grammar schools. On the origin and character of a school revolution

Abstract

The classroom in which one or several teachers instruct a single group of students seems to have emerged during the 19th century. Previously, the norm was to assign the same schoolroom to several classes and teachers. This article show that this practice must have originated at the end of the Middle Ages, why this was functional in grammar schools during the Early Modern Age, and what strategies were used to facilitate teaching in such an unfavorable setting, especially if there were many students. It also describes some multi-group classrooms about which information is available, and the main problems associated with this type of grouping.
