Authorship in Music: A Study with Students in the Early Years of Elementary School

Abstract

The objective of this research was to understand the meanings of musical statements produced by students in the activity of musical composition. Based on the relationship between music and language and in defense of music as an aesthetic experience, a didactic sequence was implemented with students from the second to fifth grade of elementary school in a Brazilian school located in the state of Paraná. To understand the meanings and how the musical composition was organized, influenced, or determined, concepts from Bakhtin’s theory were used, such as statement, discursive genres, style, and author. A musical lyric produced by the students was selected for analysis, allowing us to identify the influences of the musical genres initially chosen by them. It was also verified, through musical notation, the appropriations of musical content developed during the didactic sequence, such as the height of musical notes, rhythm, and dynamics. It is concluded that, by bringing the students’ musical repertoire, it was possible to give new meaning to what was already significant to them, thus enabling the aesthetic experience.
