«El Espíritu del Colegio». The National School of Buenos Aires and the Formation of Identities in its Students
Abstract
This article analyzes a set of printed material about the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, the main public institution in Argentina dedicated to training of the elite – only men until 1959 –, which were written by former students in the period that spans from its foundation in the mid-19th century until the 1980s. In the first section, Juvenilia by Miguel Cané, written in 1882, and which can be considered the canonical work of the series, is discussed. Then, it focuses on a set of «memoirs» that recreate the first half of the 20th century, and then addresses a group of more current novels that focus on the 70s and the last civil-military dictatorship. It analyzes how in their stories the personal history of the authors, the educational history and the general history of the country are interwoven, leading to the formation of specific identities in the students.
