Flanagan’s House: Processes of Adaptation and Appropriation of Edgar Allan Poe’s Work in The Fall of The House of Usher (Netflix, 2023)
Abstract
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) is a gothic horror miniseries created by director and producer Mike Flanagan. It recounts the story of the Ushers, a family of millionaires whose members begin to die one by one under mysterious circumstances. The series takes as its foundation Edgar Allan Poe’s homonymous tale «The Fall of the House of Usher» (1839), but it also draws on a wide range of the author’s life and literary works to weave a new narrative that highlights the richness of Poe’s universe. Within this complex intertextual framework, the present chapter will focus on analyzing the presence of the tale «The Fall of the House of Usher» in the series, considering narrative structure, character development, shared themes, aesthetic choices, and the use of the literary quotations. It will also explore how the tale is updated and adapted to resonate with contemporary audiences.
