‘Somatic marker’ in an evolutionary key: on Antonio Damasio’s contribution to the articulation between neuroscience and philosophy
Abstract Among the many terms coined by Antonio Damasio, after the publication of Descartes’ Error (1994), the concept ‘somatic marker’ is one of those that aroused the most interest among researchers dedicated to philosophy. In order to understand this notion in depth, it is necessary to consider it not only from the neurophysiological point of view, but also from an evolutionary perspective, that is, within the framework of the theory of biological evolution. In other words, in order to delve into the relevance of the ‘somatic marker’ for contemporary approaches to, for example, the emotion/reason link or the mind-body problem, it is necessary to analyze it not only in relation to the two neuroanatomical structures involved in its functioning, the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex, but also in light of the phylogeny of the nervous system in general. Hence, this concept, in particular, can be understood as one of the most important contributions of the Portuguese neuroscientist to the contemporary articulation between neuroscience, evolutionary biology and philosophy. In this article we will explore this articulation.
