Desirable pollutions: Art, Design and Social Studies of Science and Technology
Abstract In the STS2 field there are two types of desirable and pending pollutions: one internal and one external. The internal one is the debt to deepening the technological disciplines from an epistemology developed from technology practice. The external is the expansion of the interdisciplinary framework towards fields that are equivalent to traditional ones, such as art. These contaminations become desirable because we notice that between the practice cultures and the theoretical cultures, there are deep breaks not allowing the mutual understanding. Breaks take different forms, and they do not contribute to the understanding of current phenomena in a holistic way. This essay presents some of these ruptures in relation to the STS field and reviews some ideas that propose a design and a change of attitude (scholarly style) towards the disciplines to overcome the ruptures.
