Modes of Immersion. Romantic Theory and Immanent Critique
Abstract
This essay proposes a new approach to the idea of «Immanent Critique» which, drawing on the historical sources of this idea in early German Romantic theory and aesthetics, pays attention to the divergent responses of Schlegel, Novalis and Hölderlin to Fichtean postulates. If the correlation between reflection and critique constitutes the founding myth of modern-enlightened philosophy, such a correlation, although it seems to possess a supposedly inexhaustible self-explanatory power, never becomes the object of a definitive demythification. Hence, the essay considers the image of «immersion» to be an atavistic metaphor that encapsulates the main procedure of Immanent Critique and highlights the mystico-dialectical contents associated with reflection as the intellectual mythologem par excellence of modern thought. This paper thus addresses the «modes of critical immersion» exemplified, due to their more or less controversial romantic ascendancy, by the works of Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno and Peter Szondi.
