This work attests how important was the role that missionaries played in Postridentine Europe. The author remarks that the study of missions involves the comprehension of the method of the missionaries which involves the study the theological thought, but too the psychological concepts or the dramatic aspects of the performance that took place in them. In fact, popular missions were linked with baroque theatre, that means that the performance that Jesuit and Capucins developed in their missions involved pictures, music, enlightement which were used in a dramatic way. Their preaching had, a visual character and the missionaries represented most of all the Passion of Christ using specific rhetorical tropos, which caused awe and surprise in their audience. Also, the author remarks the importance of the missionary spectacle to promote a new kind of religious life. The practices that they promoted were most of all pray, processions or confession. They all contained the elements of «devout religion» with which Capucins and Jesuits tried to discipline the lay people in Postridentine Europe. This new practice was sustained by the congregations that they founded in the villages, that encouraged these particular devotional practices and a new kind of religious motives which are typical of the Postridentine period.
