The experience of harm involves, at first sight, two poles: that of the person who causes the harm (the torturer) and that of the one who suffers it (the victim). There is, however, a thirdpe.rspQcx.ive: that of third agents. They neither inflict harm ñor suffer it, but see how the torturer hurts his victim. The torturer can make his voice to be heard. He can insist on his representation of the facts, while the victim remains defenceless and silent, with his truth buried under the torturer's voice. I will show how third agents tend to assume the legitimating discourse of the torturer. They may end up that the harm caused was justified by a further good. In this paper, I will examine the role that shame, guilt and resentment play in rescuing the voice ofthe victim. This rescue will not simply consist in reconstructing what the victim says, but in vindicating his epistemic authority. The vindication ofthe victim's authority involves the description, in each case, ofthe mechanisms by which the torturer (and third agents) distorts the truth that some victims feel an imperative need to unveil.
