Maria Mondini and the study of women’s private letters from Graeco-Roman Egypt in 1917
Abstract In 1917 a papyrologist from Milan called Maria Mondini wrote “Lettere femminili nei papiri greco-egizi”, an innovative essay on Greco-Roman women’s daily life through the study of papyrus letters. Taking into account its historical background, her work, well ahead of its time, shows the life and thoughts of women belonging to two different historical periods. Regarding this, the present article aims to recognize Mondini’s life and work and to analyse it from a gender perspective.
