El último convivium de Julio César como ejemplo del acercamiento de Sir Ronald Syme a la ficción histórica
Resumen El día 14 de marzo del 44 a.C., víspera de los idus en los que Julio César fue asesinado, el dictador cenó en casa de Marco Emilio Lépido, su magister equitum. Allí se debatió acerca de cuál era la muerte más preferible, y César abogó por un fallecimiento repentino e inesperado. Este trabajo versa sobre el tratamiento que Sir Ronald Syme (1903-1989), uno de los más destacados historiadores de la Antigüedad del siglo XX, llevó a cabo de este episodio. Tras presentar la escena, en función de las escasas fuentes antiguas que la refieren, y comentar sumariamente algunos aspectos relativos a los convivia en la Roma tardorrepublicana, el artículo se centrará en analizar las puntuales, aunque muy sugestivas, menciones que R. Syme llevó a cabo del suceso. Seguidamente, el escrito tratará de explicar y de poner en contexto la visión del historiador oxoniense en dichas menciones, en las que cobra especial importancia su acercamiento a la ficción histórica, reconocida característica de la etapa final de su carrera académica. Y finalmente, se apuntarán una serie de conclusiones que consideramos pueden extraerse.
