Effects of a Proactive Intervention on Reading Skills and Difficulties Using an Online Platform

Abstract

Given the diversity of students, providing an egalitarian education and adapting to individual conditions and/or needs represents a significant challenge for the educational system. Reading acquisition is particularly relevant, directly impacting academic success and student inclusion. Low socioeconomic status—whether associated with immigration or not—and learning difficulties are two major risk factors for reading development. This study implemented a continuous assessment system over three academic years (ages 5 to 7). In alignment with Response to Intervention (RtI) models, children were assessed three times a year on five key indicators related to reading acquisition: phonological awareness, phonological and visual word reading routes, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Additionally, 191 students received a universal prevention program focused on phonemic awareness, delivered by classroom teachers at the age of five. The remaining 189 students constituted the control group. The results showed that the intervention significantly improved all five indicators, with effects persisting two years after the program implementation. Moreover, the intervention significantly impacted different socioeconomic levels, with the most potent effects observed in students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and those at higher risk of reading difficulties. A proactive, evidence-based approach, supported by technological tools and implemented by general education teachers, can significantly improve educational outcomes and foster equity and inclusion within the educational system.
