A conclusive step to the educative modernity in Portugal: the Jaime Moniz's reform
Abstract The secondary education (Liceus) under liberal system, created in 1836 by Passos Manuel government, had an irregular evolution in the 19th century with a asistematic depreciation which was translated by the withdraw of clear own purposes, focusing only instead in the access to the University. This situation was changed only in 1895 with the so-called «Reforma de Jaime Moniz». This reform has exerted influence on all sucessive transformations in secondary education till the third decade of the 20th century and may be considered the turning point to modernity of this schooling level by the introduction of adequate methodologies and the organic approach characterized by the interrelation existing between the different instructions years, disciplines and curricula subjects.
