Text and Image in La cólera, by Javier Olivares and Santiago García, or Why the Iliad Still Matters

Abstract

This paper offers an analysis of the graphic novel La cólera (The Rage, 2020), by Javier Olivares and Santiago García, focusing on the novelties of this rewriting of the Iliad, from the point of view of Classical Reception. These novelties are especially apparent in two main areas: gender and sexual identity, and social inequalities. Through the feminization of the character of Achilles, this piece of work addresses, on the one hand, a questioning of traditional gender roles, the fluidity between them and the issue of sexual orientation, and, on the other, a criticism of social injustice, that does not only affects gender, but also other social parameters, such as economic factors. Lastly, the paper illustrates some advantages of the study of recent pieces of work from the point of view of Classical Reception.
