Self-help in the Literary Work of Ida Baccini
Abstract
The life and work of Ida Baccini represent an indisputable example of the concept of self-help. The tenacity, perseverance and willpower of this woman, who in the nineteenth century managed with her virtues and defects to move on and earn a living is more than enough to scrutinize her work and penetrate into an ideology which Italian literature during the period of the unification of the country. Through a detailed study of her best-known literary production, the purpose of this article to deeply analyse the main characteristics of Victorian values transmitted by the Scottish writer Samuel Smiles the Italian Risorgimento; to conclude that the philosophy of self-help, perseverance, mutual respect and self-denial filled the stories of the Florentine writer, which powerfully contributed to the construction of a great nation based on the virtuous character of its younger people.
