Four texts on the Workers’ Parliament
Abstract During the years 1853 and 1854 a wave of strikes broke out in various industrial districts of England, especially in the textile industries of Lancashire and Manchester. This cycle of struggles, focused in an increase of workers' wages, was seen by Ernest Jones and the Chartist movement as an opportunity to organise a nationwide workers' association. Karl Marx, who shared the Chartists' vision, analysed the movement from the New York Tribune, lending support to the initiative that rose as an outcome of the struggle: the Labour Parliament. The following is a translation of four journalistic texts that Marx published in support of the workers' institution -most of them unpublished in Spanish-, followed by "The Struggles for Workers' Organisation in the Victorian Era (1853-1854)", a critical study of the cycle of strikes and the expectations of workers' organisation during those years, in which is argued that this failed attempt of organisation constitutes a precedent for the British section of the International Workingmen's Association. The translation and editing of Marx's texts, and the critical study that accompanies them, have been carried out by Mario Espinoza Pino (University of Granada).
