Love in the Times of Artificial Intelligence. Paradoxes and Realities of Sociotechnical Imaginaries Regarding Artificial Intelligence Devices as Companions and their Ability to Replace People

Abstract

In their analysis of the Danish technology scene, Hockenhull and Leavitt Cohn introduce the concept of «hot air» to describe the half-truths and exaggerations companies use to attract public attention and investment. Science fiction and advertisements from companies in the technology sector frequently describe robots of the future as intelligent, sentient beings with the ability to replace people as lovers and life partners. This paper will aim to analyze the expectations that are present in the sociotechnical imaginaries of artificial intelligence with the intention of uncovering their problems and facilitating a judgment less inflated of «hot air».
