Kafka’s Presence in The Origins of Totalitarianism through his absence. The Man Kafka in the Eyes of Arendtian’s Court of Understanding
Abstract Although Kafka was really important for Hannah Arendt, and he was so present in her 40’s texts, his absence in The Origins of Totalitarianism is blatant. Along the hundreds of pages of this book, he is referenced one single time. However, the Schocken Books editor that put so much effort at introducing Kafka in the United States, must have had it in the back of her mind in so many occasions. This article tries to bring out Kafka’s presence through his absence, carrying out a political hermeneutic of Kafkaesque traces in one of the greatest works of the 20th century political thought.
