New traces of Fray Luis de León teaching in Salamanca. (A study of the Codex 109 of Fernán-Núñez Collection, Ms. 143 UCB)

Abstract

To give a more accurate view of Luis de León as university professor, this paper has been conceived as an opportunity to offer an in-depth study of one of the Codices containing his lectures on Aquinas’ Summa. Concretely, on the II-II part of it, that he imparted during the years 1567-1569, sometimes as leading professor in the Chair of Nominal authors, sometimes as secondary one in the Chair of Prima at Salamanca University. This Codex, nowadays property of the University of California, used to publish his Tractatus de religione and other related questions, still furnishes us some surprises out of that range about fray Luis’ lectures (schemes and résumés on charity, including the questions on correction, schism, war and scandal) and also informs us about the internal constitution of the Augustinian School of Theology at the time.
