Tolstoy, Unamuno and Christian Existentialism
Abstract ABSTRACT: The primary purpose of this article is to introduce readers to the analogies in Tolstoy's and Unamuno's religious thinking within the framework of Christian existentialism. Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) writes to Ilundain in 1899 that Lev Nikolaevicz Tostoy's (1828-1910) ideas on religious matters have influenced him in a profound way. We do not know which works Unamuno refers to but the similar personalities of both writers, the congruence of their religious crisis, their converging attitudes towards Church and its dogma as well as their search for the truth in the Gospels are clear from reading of their religious essays.
