Las milicias pecuniarias en la corona de Castilla (1650-1715)

RESUMEN: La obligación de prestar servicio en las milicias de Castilla derivó en dos soluciones distintas en la coyuntura crítica de 1640: la exigencia de un servicio personal para asistir a la defensa territorial o completar las filas de los ejércitos reales por un lado y el servicio pecuniario de las milicias por otro, que se conoció en primera instancia como «Composición de Milicias» (1646-1668), aplicado a la financiación de las guerras de Cataluña y Portugal, y como «Servicio de Milicias» a partir de 1669 para el sostenimiento de los Tercios Provinciales Fijos de Españoles. Bajo el nombre de «Milicias Pecuniarias», utilizado también en la época, hemos querido significar la importancia histórica de esta vía fiscal-militar en una etapa clave de la reorganización militar española desde mediados del siglo XVII hasta comienzos de la centuria siguiente.ABSTRACT: The obligation to provide military service in the militias of Castile had its origins in two different solutions to the critical conjuncture of 1640. First was the demand for personal service to assist in territorial defence or to complete the ranks of the royal armies; the other was the pecuniary service of the militias. Initially it was known as the «Composition of militias» (1646-1668) and applied to the financing of the wars of Catalonia and Portugal; then after 1669 it became «Militia service» for the maintenance of the Fixed Spanish Provincial Regiments. Under the name of «Pecuniary militias», a name also used at that time, this article highlights the historical importance of this fiscal-military demand in a key phase of Spanish military reorganization from the mid-seventeenth century to the beginning of the eighteenth century.
