«Inside rooms to let: Economical!». The problem of workers' housing in Spain at the turn of the century

  • Luis Arias González

Abstract

While monumental palaces and mansions have constantly occupied the attention of researchers, working class housing has unjustly received little attention from historians. Erom a multidisciplinary approach, as corresponds to a topic that combines material, economic, social and ideological aspects, this article attempts to analyse working class housing as a documental source and as a historical subject in its own right that is essential for reconstructing the living conditions of the Spanish proletariat as well as the «working class» mentality existing at the turn of the century.
