Other Battles: Dream Scenarios in the Dissolution of the Tetrarchic System

Abstract

The years between the end of the Tetrarchy and the consolidation of Constantine comprise one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the 4th Century. While combat was taking place on the battlefields, other struggles were occurring in imaginary spaces, specifically in the world of dreams. The dreams, visions and nightmares of Constantine, Licinius, Majencio and Maximinius are another form of representing the confrontations among the contenders. Dreams became a first order element of propaganda, but they were also another way of expressing everyday inequalities, be they political or social.
