Introducing partial contact in an elective course of a Statistics degree
Abstract Introduction. The students of Applications of Statistics in Health Sciences get to the course with good level in theoretical, formal and computer science issues, and we set out to develop their abilities of working as a team, oral and written skills, and cognitive capacities as analysis, synthesis and evaluation in the Biostatistics area.Content. We put forward: (a) the adaptation of the curriculum to a scheme replacing 4 weekly contact hours to 2 biweekly hours (on average), plus non-contact complementary activities; and (b) the difficulties, results, and opinions expressed by the students and some conclusions from the experience.Method. The educational method has been based on the accomplishment of the following activities: 1) three exercises following cooperative learning techniques, on three international guides about presentation of biomedical results; 2) public defense as a team of a subject; 3) individualized numerical exercises; 4) team work practices; 5) three individual tests; and 6) participation in discussion forums.Conclusions. The course has been followed successfully by 21 of the 22 students enrolled, and the proposal has been well accepted. It has been stated that it is possible to make a course compatible with the requirements of the European Higher Education Area.
