Student-Centred Learning, towards a new teaching archetype

Abstract

Student-centred learning (SCL) is considered essential in the context of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), to improve the quality of education and ensure better access to higher education by being able to accommodate the diverse needs of the students. However, its practical implementation is hampered both by the insufficient level of funding and resources dedicated to it and by the lack of strategies and actions at national and institutional level for its implementation that provide teachers with the pedagogical foundations and the necessary training to understand well the concept and methods that ensure a pedagogical learning approach centered on the student. On the other hand, the implementation of student-centered learning must be evaluated and in fact SCL is a standard of the European Guidelines and Standards for Quality Assurance, adopted in 2015 by the ministerial conference of the EHEA.This paper presents updated information on SCL and its incorporation into external quality assessment processes, with identification of good practices and exploration of different implementation methods. As a result, some recommendations on practical aspects of the implementation of the SCL are proposed to facilitate their development in higher education institutions. These results could advance the practical implementation of the SCL approach in higher education that still 10 years after its adoption by the EHEA ministers, remains a challenge to be achieved.
