Great Texts and the School Canon. Schooling of Os Lusíadas
Abstract The School Canon has its origins in three sources: classic religious and literary texts; oral tradition texts; meta-educational, school and para-school, doctrinal, essayistic, synthesis texts. The educational institution and the book support gave course, order, transversality to the constitutive texts of the School Canon, as a historical and literary unit, aggregating the Nation-States and mobilizing patriotic and civic formation. This study presents the framework of transition and overcoming of First Modernity, contextualizing and summarizing the main transformations of the Western Revolution, with emphasis on education and school institutionalization, associated with Nation-States. Next, it focuses on the constitution of the Literary Canon as a national, patriotic and civic basis, and on the schooling of the Great Texts as a curricular core and progression of the School Canon. General and transversal aspects will be taken into account, but the main investigation focuses on Os Lusíadas as an Epic and core of the basic and secondary curriculum of the Portuguese School.
