Angels with Desires and Anguish: Women Teachers (and Women Workers) in the Cinema of Carlos Reichenbach
Abstract
This paper analyses the film Anjos do arrabalde: as professoras (1987), directed by Carlos Reichenbach. This Brazilian filmmaker realized other films about working women, and two of them, Girls from abc (2003) and Fake Blond (2007), that concern women workers. They are as a mirror, eventually inverted, compared to the first. The emphasis takes place on the analysis of the central characters, three public school teachers, especially regarding to free time, occasion in that they rebel and seek, within the limits of their possibilities, the achievement of their desires, against materialized violence in everyday and socially particularized experience in male figures. These, in turn, represent the inheritance of the brutality of the civil-military dictatorship (1964-1988).
