Cinema as an Educator: Visions of Formal, Non-Formal and Informal Education in the Jornal Português’ Newsreels (1938-1951)
Abstract In this article I aim at discussing, based on the notions of formal, non-formal and informal education, the way in which the propaganda machine of the Portuguese New State explored the different forms of teaching and learning. Based on a content analysis of the series of cinematographic current affairs Jornal Português (1938-1951), I describe and interpret the modalities through which the Estado Novo sought to establish the representation of education in a more global way and of the school in particular. Although the regime continually extolled the advent of schooling, in a paradoxical way, propaganda cinema invests above all in the representation and exaltation of the different possibilities of non-formal education. In turn, there was some difficulty in verifying ultimate examples of informal education. It is concluded that the Estado Novo bet was located in the scope of non-formal education.
