Okakura Kakuzō's Reinterpretation of the Concept of omoshiroi
Abstract The present article reviews the significance Okakura Kakuzō’s command of the English language had for his work. A widely acclaimed intellectual of the Meiji period, his ability to communicate with the European and North American public without the need for intermediaries established him as one of the cultural bridges between Japan and the West. Okakura’s most important works and lectures throughout his life were originally written in English. This allowed him to mould certain cultural and artistic Japanese realities through his discourse, with the aim of appealing to the enthusiasm of the artists, collectors and intellectuals interested in Japan. This article focuses the analysis on his «Nature in East Asiatic Painting» lecture, delivered in Boston in 1911. In it, Okakura made a singular interpretation of the omoshiroi concept, which he linked to the Japanese mythological tradition contained in the Kojiki.
