False subordinates
Abstract The segments que digamos, que yo sepa and que le dicen are not subordinates in all contexts: they are not, for example, in no muy cortés que digamos; Que yo sepa, nadie ha explicado eso; adelantos de la ciencia, que le dicen. They do not fit among the well-known types of subordinates, and their possibilities of replacement and expansion are very restricted. These deviations place them on the periphery of grammar, as semilexicalized syntagms, hence they will be called false subordinates. All three share a pragmatic feature, attenuation, or, under certain conditions, intensifying or ironic interpretation, both linked to modality.
