Miguel de Unamuno and the Spanish tongue. A grammar of written and spoken language
Abstract ABSTRACT: An analysis was made of eight morphosyntactic structures ordered in pairs according to their relative frequency in Unamuno's journalistic prose, in the educated speech of Madrid and in the expository prose of 38 writers. The comparison shows that Unamuno liked to resort to expressions characteristic of spoken language, even more assiduously than the commentators from Madrid. This does not mean that he renounced using rival syntactic constructions, proper to written language and sometimes exclusively so; in fact, he even used them quite frequently.
