Brazilian Amazon: occupation and socio-environmental policies
Abstract This Dossier focuses on the Amazon, the largest tropical forest in the world, where hundreds of indigenous peoples, quilombolas and traditional communities live, among others. The exponential increase in deforestation, burning, with the destruction of ecosystems and ways of life, alarmingly compromises biodiversity, the survival of communities and peoples, and life on the planet. The Dossier Amazônia Brasileira: occupation and socio-environmental policies aims to discuss the usual conceptions of development and models of action on nature, as well as their results for the environment, climate, and societies. In the five selected articles, the richness of these realities and the analytical results allows the reader to better understand the trajectories and consequences of the policies that impact the region, the communities, the use of land, water, and other resources, providing a panoramic view of the main actions of the Brazilian State and their effects on different locations and peoples of the Amazon. Alternatives exist. It is worth knowing them.
