Ronald Giere, Semanticist? A Provocative Question for the Contemporary Debate on Scientific Representation

Abstract

This paper aims to show that it is better to consider Ronald Giere’s approach separately from what has been called the semanticist family in the philosophy of science. Mainly because he rejects the dyadic relations of isomorphic representation and truth for scientific representation, we will show that, especially from his notion of similarity, a pragmatic interpretation of his approach is better, which would be in better relation to scientific practice with models itself and the contemporary debate on representation. For this purpose, we will resort to a brief example of DIBs models in biology.
