Between the 10th and 12th centuries, the Carolingian-origin counties in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula expanded towards the west at the same time as they converged towards a unitary vision of Catalonia. The documentary and archaeological analysis shines light on their phases and contents. These were an integration of a disorganised frontier fringe under baronial control in the 10th century based on the establishment of a network of castles with jurisdiction; an occupation of Islamic territory in the 11th century in line with a feudal model of enclosing the population; the conquest of the areas of the Islamic cities (Tortosa and Lérida) with a feudal army in the 12th century to give rise to “bourgeois” capitals; the structuring of the scattered rural population, complemented by a dynamic of concentration in population nuclei from the 12th century; and the move, at that time, to a demarcational understanding based on the principal urban centres, thus passing from the counties to the “veguerías” (an area ruled by a royally appointed magistrate).
