Dionysius of Halicarnassus as source of the thoughts of autochthony at the time of the fall of Constantinople

Abstract

Dionysius of Halicarnassus, giving continuity to the thoughts already defined in the time of Classical Athens, tried to transfer the Greek concept of autochthony (linking the origin of a people to their land) to the Italic sphere through the Greek origin he recognized to Roman people. During Byzantine period, the thoughts of identity changed and evolved into a political or cultural identity. At the time of the fall of Constantinople, some authors made an attempt to reconcile this new identity with the ancient thoughts, so that the result would make it posible to vindicate the Greek origins of the city of Byzantium and its empire.
