The survey presents a brief view of the Castillian-Leonese military order’s role in the formation and consolidation of the kingdom’s border with the Islam in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This role has a triple dimension –military, settler and strictly political– and it is only possible to show its efficiency from the territorial and institutional strengthening of the military orders, that is, from the first third of the thirteenth century.
