Art as a Game: Bruno Munari and the Invention of Video-Teaching

Abstract

In the extensive list of activities Bruno Munari has dedicated himself to in his career, the one related to active teaching realized through videos has never been analyzed in detail. Few have tried to gain an insight into the methodologies used by the artist with a view that is not confined to the field of artistic education in the strict sense, but covers all the territories explored by Munari. This paper, therefore, aims at analyzing the pioneering TV programme Costruire è facile within the «TV dei ragazzi» targeting young viewers, as well as the videos titled L’arte come gioco, which are the result of a long instructional activity carried out in collaboration with schools and museums worldwide. Analyzing videos is essential to reveal Munari’s personality, his going beyond all established teaching rules, and his playful and seemingly uncommitted approach towards younger pupils. Indeed, children learn by manipulating materials, drawing, creating collages and objects, and doing other pleasant activities that stimulate their creativity, thus, implementing the «Bruno Munari Method» that is still of great relevance today.
