Entre amenazas e incentivos. España en la política internacional 1895-1914

Resumen

RESUMEN: Historia de la política exterior española entre 1895 y 1914 en el marco de la profunda transformación del sistema internacional europeo que proyecta sobre España amenazas e incentivos mientras las relaciones entre las Grandes Potencias van pasando desde el concierto de la redistribución colonial a la rivalidad —moderada primero, intensa después— que acompaña la formación de la Entente. Partiendo de las debilidades de la política exterior de la Restauración, el trabajo estudia los esfuerzos diplomáticos para defender la soberanía española en Cuba, la crisis internacional de 1898, la búsqueda de una garantía internacional para la vencida metrópoli, la participación española en el reparto de Marruecos, los Acuerdos Mediterráneos de 1907 y la aparición de objetivos más ambiciosos e incompatibles con la hegemonía de la Entente franco-británica en el Mediterráneo Occidental, lo que sin duda fortalecería la neutralidad española en la Primera Guerra Mundial.ABSTRACT: History of Spanish foreign policy between 1895 and 1914 in the framework of the profound transformation of the European international system, which creates both menaces and incentives for Spain as the relationships between the Great Powers go from agreement on colonial redistribution to rivalry —moderate at first, intense later— which accompanies the formation of the Entente. Beginning with the weaknesses of the Spain’s foreign policy during the Restoration, the paper studies the efforts to defend Spanish sovereignty in Cuba, the international crisis of 1898, the search for an international guarantee for the defeated metropolis, Spanish participation in the scramble for Morocco, the Mediterranean Agreements of 1907, and the appearance of more ambitious objectives incompatible with the hegemony of the Franco-British Entente in the Western Mediterranean, which would doubtlessly strengthen Spain’s neutrality in the First World War.
