Los prefectos urbanos de Constancio IIy el comportamiento vindicativo de la plebe romana en Amiano Marcelino

Abstract

RESUMEN: Este artículo trata de analizar un grupo de tumultos populares ocurridos en Roma durante el gobierno del emperador Constancio II, y a los cuales tuvieron que hacer frente los prefectos de la Urbe Orfito, Leoncio, Artemio y Tértulo —con muy diferente actitud, según la narración que de los mismos hizo el historiador tardorromano Amiano Marcelino, la única fuente de los mismos—. Para ello, nuestro análisis pretende, por un lado, enmarcar estas seditiones en un contexto que poseía una amplia tradición en Roma: la existencia de una vis de carácter defensivo y vindicativo ejercida por la plebe urbana de Roma desde tiempos remotos, y que pervivió hasta épocas tardías conservando su sentido más ancestral de ser una respuesta legítima contra la injusticia. Por otro lado, se pretende reflexionar sobre la influencia que ciertos factores —como el miedo colectivo, la inercia de la tradición y la costumbre—, o determinados rasgos del Derecho romano y del carácter de los romanos, podían ejercer en sucesos similares a los que se estudian en este artículo. ABSTRACT: This article analyzes a group of popular uprisings which occurred in Rome during the rule of the emperor Constantius II. The prefects of Rome who had to deal with these uprisings were attitudes according to Ammianus Marcellinus, the late roman historian one hand, to put these seditiones into a context with an extensive tradition in Rome, namely the existence of a vindicating, defensive power which had bee exercised by the plebs of Rome since ancient imes and continued until later periods, conserving its ancestral sense of being a legitimate response to injustice. On the other hand, the article reflects on the way in which these events may have been influenced by certain factores —such as collective fear and the inertia of tradition and custom— or certain features of Roman law and of the character of the Romans.
