Integration an recognition in the context of heterogeneous societies

Abstract

In this paper the controversial issue and term of ‘integration’ will be reflected on the basis of theoretical considerations and empirical results taken from a study about orientations and forms of acting of young immigrant women in Germany. It will be discussed if the term of ‘integration’ is even suited for a subject-orientated and a sociocritical analyses of the situation of youth (with and without immigrant background) in social and cultural heterogeneous societies. It will also be questioned, whether the focus on integration does not reproduce existent conditions of social inequality and established categories of insiders and outsiders. As a conceptual alternative the author suggests to focus on “agency”.
