Unversity, interculturality and public discourse. The university in a social-democratic context

Abstract

The university constitutes the privileged place of civil society in which citizens seek new knowledge and prepare themselves to participate as experts in the discussion and resolution of all theoretical and practical issues relevant to society. University education has to contribute, therefore, to the formation of teachers and researchers, technologists and experts in the diverse spheres of knowledge, and to the training for critical thinking through the development of ethical, cultural and discursive skills. In this regard, university graduates are - should be- people qualified not only to enlarge their knowledge methodically and systematically, but also to reflect critically on central questions of human coexistence in a democratic system. Thus, university graduates would have to be professionals and experts as well as "people of principles", proficient in their own culture and in the historical context of implementation.
