The Boarding School as a Key to Historical-Educational Reading: The Work O Ateneu, by Raul Pompeia
Abstract The article proposes a study on the work O Ateneu, by the Brazilian writer Raul Pompeia. Published at the end of the 19th century, the novel addresses a critical-memorial experience of the author who, driven by historical circumstances, systematizes his school reminiscences, creating characters, situations and cases that marked him as a subject-protagonist. The hypothesis is that Pompeia exposes his arguments and convictions due to a precise examination of his existential conditions, linked to the peculiarities of the moment in which he reflected the institutional experience he faced. The content of the novel was investigated, seeking to understand the historical-educational statu quo and its link with Raul Pompeia’s literary affiliation. The work observed the articulations between work and situation. It is concluded that the work discusses the tense climate of the time, articulated with the institutional adversities of a boarding school model, which associates and brings together a complex network of existential and cultural comforts.
