La geografía en el libro de texto en la enseñanza secundaria. Uso y producción de manuales en el bachillerato gallego decimonónico

RESUMEN: El indudable protagonismo que el libro de texto ha tenido —y tiene— en la segunda enseñanza ha convertido a este material didáctico en una fuente imprescindible para el estudio del curriculum en el nivel educativo secundario. En la determinación de los manuales que en el siglo XIX sirvieron de base para el estudio de las distintas disciplinas, intervino la Administración, confeccionando las listas de las obras que podían utilizarse para cada disciplina, y el propio profesor, optando, con más o menos libertad, según las épocas, por alguna de las obras existentes en el mercado sobre su asignatura. El presente trabajo tiene por objeto dar a conocer las obras de texto más utilizadas y los autores de texto más influyentes en el bachillerato decimonónico gallego, así como determinar la implicación del profesorado de los institutos de Galicia en la redacción de manuales, aspectos imprescindibles para llevar a cabo cualquier estudio posterior relativo al curriculum de secundaria o a la historia de la profesión docente en el contexto geográfico gallego. ABSTRACT: The undeniable role textbooks have played —and still play— in secondary education has turned this didactic instrument into an essential source for the study of the curriculum at a secondary-education level. Both the Administration and the teachers themselves took part in the selection of the manuals used in the 19th century for the different subjects, the former by issuing a list of all the works that could be used for each subject, the latter by selecting one textbook among all the works available for their subjects, their degree of freedom always depending on the epoch. The objective of the present paper is to present the most commonly used works and the most relevant textbook authors of the 19th century in Galicia. It also tries to determine the degree of involvement of Galician secondary education centres in the preparation of teaching manuals. Both aspects are essential for the development of a subsequent research either into the curriculum in secondary education or into the history of the teaching profession in the Galician geographical context.
