Abstract

The stratigraphie, tectonic and morphological analysis of the zone between Alba de Tormes and Cantalpino (prov. Salamanca, Spain) located at the contact between Miocene, Paleogene and Paleozoic of the southwestern border of the Duero Basin, shows the existence of a new fracture line (Villagonzalo Fault) in addition to the formerly deduced Alba-Villoria and Salamanca Faults, assocciated to the last one. This WNW-ESE trending set originated prior to the NNE-SSW trending Alba-Villoria set. Through the motion occurred along these fault surfaces, the region was affected by isolation of different stratigraphie units in the resulting blocks. This has permitted the identification in the Pre-Lutetian of Salamanca of two separate formations in addition to the Salamanca Sandstone, named respectively, Amatos Sandstone and Almar River Sandstone. The morphology of the region has been conditioned by these fractures and strongly influenced by the quaternary fluvial dynamics.
