Counterpoint of Los Orishas and Los Aldeanos: Cuban hip hop in and outside the Revolution
Abstract This paper examines Cuban hip hop in the (post) «Special Period» as a scriptible or writerly text. I contrast the commercial sphere of Los Orishas to the «underground» sphere of Los Aldeanos vis-à-vis the «nationalization» of hip hop in Cuba. Through a close reading of song lyrics and considering also musical elements, I demonstrate the way Los Orishas and Los Aldeanos navigate Cuban Revolutionary ideology, oscillating between nationalism and cosmopolitanism. Paradoxically, Los Orishas operate within a Revolutionary ideology, despite living outside of Cuba, whereas Los Aldeanos exploit their position in Havana to represent their actual conditions and criticize their government. This paper illustrates the importance of Cuban hip hop in and outside the island for the flow of information and culture.
