Traces of krausism in San Manuel Bueno, mártir by Miguel de Unamuno
Abstract San Manuel Bueno, mártir is often presented as a «reactionary » novel that contradicts the rather progressive attitude asserted by Miguel de Unamuno. A literary analysis centered in the discourse and metadiscourse of the novel, along with an evaluation of the ironic traits, allows the lector to question the validity of this interpretation. The congruentes in the theme and the forro that exist between San Manuel Bueno, mártir by Unamuno and Minuta de un testamento by Gumersindo de Azcárate permit a «heterodox» reading of the novel, related with the religious and political ideology defended by the ninenteenth century krausists.
