Towards Unamuno's System

Abstract

ABSTRACT: An effort to find criteria for a systematic ordering of Unamuno's texts. he essentially dealt with four themes: Spain, personal immortality, the constitution of the ego, and writing. One of these themes predominates respectively in each period of his evolution, except writing, on which he reflected throughout his entire life. For this reason, it cannot serve as a criterion for the characterization of any particular epoch. On the basis of the respective predominant theme I propose a classification of Unamuno's work in three epochs: 1884 to 1897 (Spain), 1897 to 1913 (immortality), 1913-1930 (personality). From his return from exile in 1930 until his death in 1936 Unamuno appears detached from his circumstances. This fin2t1 stage, therefore, is not defined by a theme but by an attitude. Using a semiological method, I have characterized each period by what I consicler its fundamental sign: background, abyss, agony, remembrance.
