The Beginnings of the Philological Friendship: between Ramón Menéndez Pidal and Miguel de Unamuno

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Miguel de Unamuno and Ramón Menéndez Pidal, both representatives of Spanish philology at the turn of the century with different basic approaches, agreed on the need for a profound renovation of this area, parallel to that of other scientific research. Although both were rivals in the Academy's competition on Gramática y Vocabulario del Poema del Cid, their first personal contact took place during the exam for the Chair of Philology of the University of Madrid. unamuno's renunciation would ease the rise of a professional and personal relationship characterized by a most sincere loyalty and respect. This article offers the beginning of the correspondence between pidal and Unamuno, which shows the start of a friendship that was to have philological consequences of great interest.
