Contributions of Unamuno to the Bizcayne Dialect

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this work was to determine the use and diffusion of the so-called "Biscay dialec" that Miguel de Unamuno used consciously, intentionally and voluntarily in certain publications; to this end, we have concentrated on lexical analysis. Although we feel that an exclusively lexical peculiarity —so conscientiously reflected in the writings by Unamuno that we analyzed— is not enough to defend the existence of a dialect differente from common Spanish, its use by certain speakers of the geographical area of Biscay is an indication of the coexistence of two languages, Castilian and Basque, and of the continual linguistic interferences experienced by both of them in the north of Spain.
