Its key, we argue, lies in Unamuno's Pascal, here presented as D. Miguel's alter ego in a dialogue with Pascalian theologian A.-R. Vinet. Intellectual and spiritual attitudes attributed to Pascal in Chapter 9 pervade the whole essay. The agony of Christianity, or the struggle between inner opposites, comes clear on alI levels without excluding or prioritizing any, as critics tend to do. In Unamuno and in his Pascal, faith opposes reason, faith struggles against the will to helieve, solitary devotion competes with the sense of community, and Christian culture contends with more materialistic cultures.
